Chairs occupy a prominent place in our homes. They come in many different styles to furnish our rooms according to our desires. The traditional fabric chair adorns refined interiors, whatever their style, whether classic or rustic.

The traditional fabric chair: quality craftsmanship

Our antique style fabric chairs are made using traditional methods from the past, while benefiting from contemporary expertise. Chairs are one of the most delicate pieces of furniture to make. It is always tricky to assemble thin wooden elements and give them enough strength. As a piece of furniture that is used a lot, because it is often moved, it must be able to support a significant weight.

The different parts of an antique chair

The traditional fabric chairs from Maison Saulaie are part of a wide range, which also includes cane and straw chairs. They are all designed with the same three distinct parts, on which our craftsmen exercise their talents:

The back. This is often what will give the chair its style. The shape can be straight, in the Marie Leszczyńska or Marie-Antoinette style, or concave, like the Louis XV style. It can be solid or openwork, minimalist or decorated with a central motif executed by hand. We give pride of place to the palmette, this decoration in the shape of a palm leaf, characteristic of the Directoire style. You will also find upholstered backs, which match the fabric of the seat. The seat. An important element, which will often determine the comfort of your traditional chair. Ours are filled with high-density foam, which can be placed on interwoven jute webbing. They are covered with delicate fabrics, in shades of ivory, beige or other colours to choose from. There are many models that you can customise with your own fabric, so that it matches your interior decoration. We have designed them so that they can be easily detached. The base. This is what the stability of the chair rests on. It can be simple, with four straight legs, rectilinear or carved to end in a ball, as in the Directoire style. With the Louis XV style, our craftsmen give free rein to their talent, in order to enhance the curved leg. The legs can be joined by bars, sometimes elegantly worked.

Where to put your traditional fabric chair?

The dining chair is the subject of much attention, for many reasons. It is generally found in a collection of several pieces and is most often intended to accommodate guests. It is important that they feel comfortable and appreciate its comfort. You will easily find in our collection of antique handcrafted chairs, those that will give your dining room the elegance it deserves.

The living room chair often has a more intimate character. Intended to offer an alternative to the armchair, it will most often have a curved back, forming an armrest. It can also be found in front of a desk or around a gaming table. In the bedroom, the chair is an occasional piece of furniture, a highlight to carefully chosen furniture. Barette, Grasse, Palmette, Directoire… all our chairs can easily be combined with a solid wood bedroom. Its fabric can be identical or in keeping with that of your bedspread or curtains.
